Off Sweden’s southeastern coast lies the popular island of Öland. This gem in the Baltic Sea is Sweden’s second-largest island and offers unique nature experiences and plenty to explore for the whole family. The island is approximately 130 km long and 20 km wide, and during the summer, it is a highly popular destination for creating lasting holiday memories.
In northern Öland stands the Långe Erik Lighthouse, which is open to visitors during parts of the summer, offering a spectacular view from its balcony. Opposite Långe Erik lies Trollskogen, an ancient pine forest set in a fairytale-like landscape that truly lives up to its name, providing an extraordinary hiking experience.
The picturesque coastal village of Byxelkrok is a popular summer destination, known for its excellent smoked fish. Visitors can stroll along the harbor promenade and take day trips by boat to the mythical island Blå Jungfrun. The unique Hagskogsvägen winds south along the coast from Byxelkrok, with numerous charming rest stops along the way, including Tokenäs Lighthouse, which offers fantastic views of Kalmarsund and Blå Jungfrun. After a few kilometers, the road turns 90 degrees into the forest, and the landscape changes completely. Here you will encounter straight roads through Bödaskogen, a forest rich in lingonberries and blueberries.
Borgholm, in central Öland, offers a combination of town, forest, alvar plains, a castle, and the sea. As early as the 19th century, Borgholm became popular as a spa and seaside resort; the Öland air was considered especially beneficial, attracting guests from all over Sweden. Since then, it has remained a well-visited summer town, with activities throughout the season, such as the celebration of Crown Princess Victoria’s birthday on July 14. On the eastern side of the island, you’ll find beautiful sandy beaches, and along the southeastern coast runs Fågelvägen, a 50 km stretch of coastline rich in ancient fortresses, birdwatching spots, runestones, mills, churches, nature reserves, and much more to discover.
At the southern tip of Öland stands Långe Jan Lighthouse, Sweden’s tallest lighthouse at 41.6 meters, offering magnificent views from the top. All the way down to the southern tip of Öland stretches a wonderful landscape with a unique cultural heritage. Since 2000, the cultivated landscape has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized as one of the world’s most unique places.
