About Varberg
Varberg, the pearl of the west coast, is a beloved tourist town.
Many come here to spend their days off, and since the 1800s Varberg has been known as a spa resort. Even today you can enjoy traditional seaweed baths, mud treatments and other soothing therapies for body and soul. The town offers beautiful beaches, an impressive fortress and a lively town square market.
You don’t have to travel far from the centre to find a place to unwind and escape the stresses of everyday life. Visit the sandy beach of Apelviken or the rocky bathing spots at Getterön for a refreshing dip in the North Sea. If a perfectly even tan is what you’re after, there’s even a nude beach just outside the centre. With about 60 kilometres of coastline offering swimming opportunities, there is truly a spot for every mood.
Apelviken, the largest beach, is also one of Northern Europe’s best windsurfing locations—so bring your board and head out for adventure.
Stroll along the beautiful Strandpromenaden. Take a moment on a seaside rock to soak in the atmosphere, and at the end of the walk you’ll find Varberg Fortress, which has stood here since the late 1200s. This defensive stronghold also served as a prison until 1931, but today it houses, among other things, the Varberg County Museum and the famous Bocksten Man. Bring the family and explore the old prison cells and other fascinating sights.
Once you return to the town centre, the pace picks up. With summer comes outdoor dining, and the town offers numerous shows and live music. A popular highlight is the “Happy Jazz Days,” which fill Varberg with even more life and rhythm.
Societetsparken is a charming place for a leisurely walk—or why not challenge the family to a round of mini golf? There is also an outdoor stage where concerts take on a life of their own, and the verandah bar offers even more music to enjoy.
Take a walk around Varberg and explore its museums and historic buildings, visit the bustling market square or stop by the Harbour Warehouse (Hamnmagasinet) with its glassblowing, silversmithing and art exhibitions.
Åkulla Bokskogar is Halland’s first designated tourist area—a vast natural landscape filled with lakes, hiking trails and riding paths. If you need a break from the beach and the lively summer streets, it’s well worth a visit.
